  • Zona Volleyball Club (Tucson, Arizona) offers volleyball training and competitive opportunities to athletes in grades 4-12.  Because athletes choose to play volleyball outside of the school season for many reasons, Zona offers junior level teams that vary in time commitment, financial commitment, and intensity.  Regardless of the team, Zona's mission is to promote and encourage the growth and development of volleyball in the Tucson area.  We accomplish our mission by:

*Providing an experienced, qualified coaching staff that is trained to aid athletes in developing volleyball skills, system knowledge, and team dynamics.
*Training our athletes to play volleyball in a positive and nurturing environment where teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun are emphasized.
*Guiding athletes and parents who desire to pursue volleyball at the collegiate level through the recruiting process.

We love volleyball and genuinely want all of our athletes to have a great experience.  Our success as a club is not measured by wins and losses, but by the growth and development of our athletes.  We want all of our athletes to learn the game, love their experience, and develop a lifelong passion for the sport.

    What is Zona Volleyball Club?
Club volleyball is similar to other organizations that offer sport training and competition away from the school environment (AYSO, Little League, Pop Warner, etc.).  Zona is a branch of USA Volleyball, the national governing board for volleyball in the United States.  USA Volleyball works in conjunction with the International Volleyball Federation to provide equal opportunities and maximum enjoyment for participants and spectators, while maintaining the values of fair play and peaceful involvement.  As a part of USA Volleyball, Zona and its members must adhere to the rules, standards, and code of ethics as established by the governing body.

    Eligibility
Zona divides participants into like age groups for training and competition.  Athletes are placed onto teams based on their USA Volleyball age (U11-U18), which are updated annually by USA Volleyball.

Athletes are allowed to play in higher age divisions, but are not allowed to play in divisions lower than their age.  Regional waivers are available in some cases that allow athletes to play in a lower age division.  However, such waivers are granted on a provisional basis (as determined by the Arizona Region Commissioner) and are honored only within the Arizona Region.

    Organizational Structure
Zona is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), corporation supported by a Board of Directors and managed by corporate officers.

    Board of Directors
Zona's board consists of five members:  Michelle Malis, Tassi Call, Richard Bartsch, David Williams, and Ken James.  The Board is responsible for approving budget proposals, approving staff assignments, and determining disciplinary action for staff and members according to the USA Volleyball and Zona VBC guidelines.

    Corporate Officers
The Director, A.J. Malis, is the liaison between the Board and the coaches and parents.  The Director is in charge of organizing practice and tournament times and sites, enforcing policy, and making strategic planning decisions.
The Administrator, Michelle Malis, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the club.  The Administrator is in charge of all financial matters and all travel plans.  The Administrator is the liaison between the coaches and the players/parents.

Zona offers volleyball skills training and competition for the athlete who wants to play volleyball outside of their school season.  Because of the structure of the school seasons, training time is limited.  Club volleyball allows the athlete an additional 6 months of volleyball--most of which time is committed to training.  The additional training time allows athletes to concentrate on improving techniques and game knowledge.  Zona hires and trains only the highest qualified coaches to teach and train volleyball skills and systems.  In addition to training, Zona offers the best recruiting services for athletes interested in pursuing volleyball at the collegiate level in Tucson.  Not only are the athletes exposed to recruiting opportunities at national tournaments, but we also aid athletes who are interested in college playing opportunities.

Teams are formed in November.  We evaluate all athletes and form region teams and travel teams.  Practices are sporadic through the month of December.  Full practice schedule and competition schedule begins in January.  Region teams practice through the Region Championship tournament (April for U12 teams; May for U14-U18 teams).  Travel teams train through the end of June.

    Training Time Commitment
Region teams practice 2 times per week.
Travel teams will practice 3 times per week.

All weeknight practices will start no earlier than 6:00pm.  Sunday practice times will start no earlier than 11:30am.  Practices run 2-2.5 hours per session.

Specific training schedules will be provided after teams are formed when we know the number of teams per age group.

    Competition Time Commitment
Region teams compete 1-2 Saturdays per month in the either the Club or Championship Club division of the Arizona Region.

Travel teams compete 1 Saturday per month in the Open division of the Arizona Region.  In addition, travel teams attend select national tournaments (multiple day tournaments) throughout the season.

Region competition schedules (Club, Championship, and Open divisions) are determined by the Arizona Region.

    Financial Commitment
The season cost for Zona varies by team.  Season fees are broken down into monthly tuition payments.  Factors that affect the season fees include number of practices per week, number of players per team, power league contract, and national tournament schedule.

All season fees will be published before teams are formed so that parents and athletes can understand the financial commitment before they join a team.
